Freedman Bureau
The time of change comes with leadership and strong advocates for change. New reforms, and policies took place during the Reconstruction Era along with social structure changes. A plan was set out for newly freed slaves to integrate into the south after the end of slavery (1) Oliver O. Howard leader of the Freedman's Bureau, Howard main goal for the Freedman's bureau was to aid newly freed slaves. Helping them thrive in the south, education was a priority but more importantly in the political field. By means of proper labor work contracts, and even land owning contracts. (2)Freedman's bureau was originally a one-year plan imposed by government to help assimilate newly freed slaves, which later was extended another year. Lyman Trumbull
Advocate for the Civil War and the Reconstruction Era, and a Liberal Republican, Trumbull is best known for (5)the Civil Rights bill of 1866. This bill stated that everyone who has born in the U.S was considered to be a U.S citizen, with equal rights and property owning rights. This bill also leads to the ratification of the 13Th amendment in 1865, which abolished slavery in the south. Trumbull had a change of hearts starting off in the Democratic Party serving in the U.S House of Representatives, which he later switched to the Republican side since he supported slavery, he then again change back to the Democratic Party following the (6) Reconstruction Policy imposed by president Andrew Johnson which enabled and gave former Confederate leaders power back and pardon southern whites that were mainly white supremacist. Newly freed slaves suffered the same ways as slavery once again. Trumbull joined the (7)Liberal Republican Party which main purpose was to challenge Ulysses S. Grant’s Administration of 1872. Liberal Republicans
This party also known as the Republican Party was mainly composed of (8)Protestants small business owners and white educated males who felt they had been stripped of their power or position in the south, by Grant's administration of 1872. During the Reconstruction period Horace Greeley, devoted support of Lincoln during the (9) 1860 Republican National Convention and even in his presidential term. Greeley was an advocate for the end of slavery for a new reform and for a stronger and unified south. Greeley was nominated for the running presidency campaign of 1872. (9) Greeley set out to regain power from the corrupt politicians who had manipulated and taken votes from the working class and immigrants, who had no proper representation in the political world. (10) Greeley lost the presidency due to lack of votes form his endorsers who chose to not vote. Greeley had lost the presidency but left a certain mark that the south needed a new policy reform.
